Conventions

The pandemic threw a wrench in a couple of plans I’d been working on in 2019, but I’ve tried getting back on that horse in 2022 with my first panel discussion, and have submitted talks to other conventions coming up later this year.

Tools used: Keynote, PowerPoint, and Google Slides.

“UX is Everywhere” panel discussion
I was asked to be the expert on Accessibility (A11y) for this panel which was organized by Mary Burton, the former Director of Design for American Family Insurance, who was part of my interview process when joining their team in 2020.

For my portion, I spoke about how easily Accessibility fits in with the larger Usability portion of our roles, and that expanding our testing to include more diverse feedback can only make us and our teams stronger. Questions ranged from technical focused (eg: how to comply with WCAG) to theoretical (eg: how to include A11y within AI & ML projects).

“UX Barriers – Evangelize Value” panel discussion
I was asked to be the Accessibility (A11y) and Design Ops expert for this panel which was organized by Kat Richards, the Associate Director of Experience Strategy at Digitas (a Milwaukee legend).

For my portion, I spoke about how the push to “shift left” design efforts can impact the entire roadmap, saving QA time and avoiding the dreaded design+dev delays. Questions ranged from technical focused (eg: how to integrate design into Jira/Agile) to theoretical (eg: how/where to plan or strategize with design).
